Racial differences in family support and formal service utilization among older persons: a nonrecursive model
Article Abstract:
Differences between white and black older people in their use of two major sources of social support for activities of daily living, informal assistance from relatives and formal community services, are explored. Blacks are found to more commonly use both types of support to ease the burden on caregivers. Those who receive more informal support tend to have a lower availment of formal services. This, however, does not automatically mean that blacks who utilize more formal services lack informal support. For whites, results indicate a decline in informal support when formal services are availed of.
