Slowing of contractile properties in quail skeletal muscle with aging
Article Abstract:
In vitro contractile studies of the anterior latissimus dorsi muscle (ALD) of Japanese quails of different ages reveal the reduction of shortening velocity and the two twitch contractile characteristics of ALD with aging. Aging causes a shift in the force-frequency curve of twitches at 5 and 10 Hz due to fusion of the twitches. The force-velocity method confirmed the decrease in shortening velocity to 1. 19 (plus or minus) 0.02 mL s.

Ethanol metabolism and aging: the role of "first pass metabolism" and gastric alcohol dehydrogenase activity
Article Abstract:
The influence of age and gender on ethanol metabolism, first-pass metabolism (FPM) and gastric alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity is investigated. The results showed that in young adults, FPM and gastric ADH activity was higher in men than in women. In the elderly group, FPM was very low among men but it was not significantly reduced in women. Gastric ADH activity was very low for both men and women in the elderly group.
