Phase-outs, floors, and caps
Article Abstract:
IRC provisions on phase-outs, floors and caps contained result to taxpayers paying more due to higher effective and marginal rates. Phase-outs deny portions of deductions, exclusions or tax credits when the adjusted gross income surpasses particular thresholds. Floors are limits above which expenses are deductible while caps are thresholds below which expenses are deductible. Itemized deductions influence vulnerability of taxpayers who itemize to higher taxes due to floors. Taxpayer status and income level may also result to increased taxes due to phase-outs and caps. Higher taxation can be abated through three different methods: modification of the timing of recognition, modification of the method of reporting and modification of the total amounts of taxable income.
