The Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale

Article Abstract:

A comparative study of the Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale and the Falls Efficacy Scale with data from aged outpatients and clinicians reveals the preference of the ABC scale for the detection of balancing confidence loss. Though both scales are consistent and efficient, the ABC scale provides a varied response range and a better cumulative scale. The ABC scales also exhibit better discriminations among the two mobility groups studied.

Balance and gait performance in an urban and a rural population

Article Abstract:

Differences in lifestyle and activities of living appear to affect balance and gait performance. Researchers tested balance, gait speed and step length in 269 men and women who had always lived in a city and 354 who had always lived in a rural area. Urban residents walked faster and took fewer steps compared to rural residents and also had impaired balance. Spare time activities had a significant impact on balance and gait performance.

Improving balance

Article Abstract:

Shoes that offer soles of high resiliency, such as modern athletic shoes, are more likely to have a destabilizing affect when worn by older adults. These shoes destabilize the body by lessening a person's sense of position and orientation. According to a study of older and younger participants it is possible to achieve comfort in both high and low resiliency technology.
