Urinary incontinence in a community-based cohort: prevalence and healthcare-seeking

Article Abstract:

Urinary incontinence is fairly common in community-dwelling middle-aged and elderly people but many do not seek treatment. This was the conclusion of a study of one group of 778 men and 762 women 50 years and older and one group of 2,150 men 40 years or older. In the first group, 24% of the men and 49% of the women had an incontinent episode in the past year. Men were more likely to seek treatment than women. In the second group, 17.3% had experienced incontinence, but only 8.5% sought treatment.
