A methodology for scoring open-ended architectural design problems
Article Abstract:
Psychometric and architectural principles were integrated to create a general approach for scoring open-ended architectural site-design test problems. In this approach, solutions are examined and described in terms of design features, and those features are then mapped onto a scoring scale by means of scoring rules. This methodology was applied to two problems that had been administered as part of a national certification test. Because the test is not currently administered by computer, the paper-and-pencil solutions were first converted to machine-readable form. One problem dealt with the spatial arrangement of buildings in a country club, and the other called for regarding of a site by rearranging contours. In both instances, the results suggest that computer scoring is feasible. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Operator work design and robotics system performance: a serendipitous field study
Article Abstract:
The effect of increased operator on the performance of a robotics line was examined. The introduction of a new payment system led operators to assume more responsibility for fault management. Data covering 101 shifts before and 127 shifts after the change showed a progressive improvement in system uptime. As predicted, initial gains were attributable to a quicker response to operating faults, shown by a reduction in downtime per incident; later additional gains were attributable to fault prevention. The implications of the findings for both theory and practice are discussed. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Defining welfare spells: coping with problems of survey responses and administration data
Article Abstract:
Several of the major problems surrounding the definition of welfare durations are described. A substantial amount of administrative churning is determined in administrative data by comparing survey and administrative data from the work Pays Demonstration Project.
