A prescription for public housing staff safety
Article Abstract:
Maintenance personnel should be alerted about the dangers of contracting AIDS and Hepatitis B at work and must exercise caution when dealing with possible contaminated materials. For instance, they must take care in handling trash and cleaning units. Any needle or sharp object with blood that is found should be submitted for medical evaluation. In situations wherein tenants bleed, maintenance workers should wear rubber gloves and use protective clothing and eye protection when cleaning up. Any contact with such fluids should also be subject to medical attention. Most of the effort has been focused on how to deal with infected tenants and their blood and body fluid spills. However, employees should also be informed about the other ways they can contract AIDS and Hepatitis B both on and away from their jobs through training, since education is the most effective way of preventing the spread ofsuch diseases.

Connecticut Commons and Sheridan Mews
Article Abstract:
The Housing Authority of the City of Stamford, CT, has succeeded in building low-income housing projects that followed old-style townhouse site planning and design. Connecticut Commons and Sheridan Mews, both situated on inner city areas, are duplexes that are designed much like single family homes. Each housing unit comes with a living room coat closet, a panty, a country-style kitchen adjacent to a deck and a private yard with picket fences. The two housing developments used materials and paint that make them blend well into the neighborhoods where they are situated. The design of Connecticut Commons and Sheridan Mews was noted by Department of Housing and Urban Development Regional Dir John Mastropetro as being very appropiate for scattered site infill housing.
