Bringing abuses to light: the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival focuses the public eye on human rights abuses
Article Abstract:
The 1997 Human Rights Watch International Film Festival featured 20 films that focused on human rights issues in the US, Zimbabwe, Bosnia and China, among other countries. Motion pictures are a powerful medium for documenting abuses in countries that control other forms of media. Documenting conditions in such countries can itself be considered a subversive act, and the film festival celebrates such efforts. These films explore rule of law and amnesty issues in a number of nations.
