Change in the extended family living among elderly people in South Korea, 1970-1980
Article Abstract:
The determinants of the decline in multigenerational living in South Korea from 1970 to 1980 were investigated. Nationally representative samples of the population of elders 60 years and older found in the 1970 and 1980 census micro files were used in the study. It was found that structural changes are important components in the theory of changing household arrangements among elderly people. Examples of these changes include those of rural age structures and those caused by rural-urban migration. Moreover, it was demonstrated that need increasingly determines parent-child coresidence.

Assessing the food situation in North Korea
Article Abstract:
The severe 1998 food crisis in North Korea is a result of poor economic and trade policy. North Korea's annual food deficit is estimated to be at 12%. Hazardous weather and the collapse of the Soviet Union has also damaged North Korea's food industry. Neighboring countries such as South Korea and Japan have a higher reliance on food imports than North Korea, but the neighboring countries have better economic and trade policies.

Altruism and migration: evidence from Korea and the United States
Article Abstract:
The relationship between altruism and the decision to migrate from rural to urban areas is analyzed based on data from the US and Korea. An urban-to-rural income ratio suggested by the dynastic model is used. The weighted income ratio performs better compared to other types used in previous research. The model shows that higher familial altruism is directly related to a higher weight of white-collar income.
