Compared to other countries: How exceptional are the health and income security arrangements of the United States?

Article Abstract:

The Bush administration plans to make individuals dependent for retirement income by reducing shared Social Security guarantees and has promoted reliance on individual insurance rather than social insurance for healthcare. Social Security's finances are in a better position as compared to similar funds in continental Europe due to numerous reasons one of them being that the US demographics are more favorable.

Medicare Part D and low-income Medicare beneficiaries

Article Abstract:

Medicare beneficiaries and dually eligible beneficiaries would need local, individualized, face-to-face assistance when they are enrolling in Medicare Part D and selecting a prescription drug plan. While plans would need accurate, up-to-the-minute eligibility, and cost-sharing status, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) would need to act quickly to rectify wrong information.

Social Security and Medicare would face financial difficulties mainly due to existing laws and future projections. These shortfalls could be met by changing the future law, by raising taxes, cutting benefits, or some of both.
