Developing public property: creative approaches
Article Abstract:
Decreasing availability of public funds and increasing restrictions on the private sector have required innovative approaches to complete needed urban development programs. Often, the public and private sectors join together in urban development projects, and many of these programs have been financially and aesthetically successful. One area in which these public-private joint ventures have been particularly successful is in the design and construction of public buildings on public lands, such as transportation terminals, parking garages, and municipal office buildings. The new approach allows the public facilities to be integrated more smoothly with the private buildings surrounding them. described.

The urban future: new policies and issues
Article Abstract:
Federal policy makers must recognize the significance of cities as a pivotal part of social and economic policy at a national level. A strategic approach to urban development must be devised at each level of government, which means making decisions and targeting available resources. The quality of the urban labor force must be addressed, and problems of development finance, including tax policy, must be resolved. Public roles must be redefined and realigned for success. A new era of community relationships must be forged to pool public and private efforts. Urban development must strategically integrate many types of policies to maximize economic conditions for city dwellers.
