Domestic workers: out of the shadows
Article Abstract:
The lack of legal protection available to undocumented aliens employed as domestic workers is surveyed as part of a project conducted by the National Organization for Women Legal Defense Defense and Education Fund. Among the abuses suffered are denial of the wages, social security and workers' compensation benefits required by law, unsafe working conditions, and sexual and physical abuse from employers who use as leverage the workers' illegal status. Legal reforms abolishing sanctions for employers of illegal domestics and the establishment of workers' rights education programs for illegal domestics are needed to end the exploitation of undocumented domestics.

Is actuarially fair insurance pricing actually fair? A case study in insuring battered women
Article Abstract:
Legislation that bans actuarial classification of battered women as a higher life and health insurance risks promotes fairness in the pricing of insurance. Some insurance companies have claimed that insurance prices should be higher for abuse victims because they draw more from the insurance pool. Society, not the women, should bear the cost because communities have failed to adequately protect women. Much state legislation only prohibits categorical price discrimination against battered women, but the best laws ensure that no insurance practices unfairly burden such women.
