Social movements and health insurance: a critical evaluation of voluntary, non-profit insurance schemes with case studies from Ghana and Cameroon
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the performance of non-profit, voluntary health insurance plans and their potential contribution to health in Cameroon and Ghana, Africa. Two case studies were examined based on the criteria of efficiency, social movement, financial results, access and equity. Results indicate that the Babouantou Family Mutual Aid Assn in Cameroon is an autonomous social movement wherein the key indicators are considerably stronger than that of the Nkoranza Community Financing Scheme in Ghana.

The reform of the rural cooperative medical system in the People's Republic of China: interim experience in 14 pilot counties
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the rural cooperative medical systems' (RCMS) reform in the People's Republic of China. The objective was to investigate the extent to which the RCMS had reduced the risk of paying health care bills that should have been otherwise shouldered by families. Results indicate that the burden of health care costs on families was modestly reduced. Findings also imply that there is still ample room for improvement on RCMS.
