Evaluating government-sponsored R&D consortia in Japan: who benefits and how?
Article Abstract:
A Japanese Research & Development consortia relative to industry performance, firms' motivations for participation and participants' perceived merits and demerits of projects is examined. Government-sponsored R&D and survey responses from high-level corporate managers make up the data for analysis. Results reveal that frequent participation in government-sponsored R&D consortia positively affects research expenditure and productivity hastened by high knowledge spillovers within the consortia.

Why has Britain had slower R&D growth?
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom's Research and Development slow growth compared to highly industrialised countries is examined. The Organization on Economic Cooperation and Development's 1973-1992 figures for Business Enterprise R&D provide the data for analysis. Results reveal no definite factors of demand growth, government policies or knowledge spillovers to explain UK's slow growth in R&D. Further studies are suggested on the fiscal, education and training elements of UK's R&D growth.
