Learning about bilingual, multicultural organizing
Article Abstract:
Based on the authors' synthesis of the multicultural literature, this article proposes that for organizing to succeed in bilingual, multicultural environments, three roles - organizer, interpreter, and multicultural mediator - must be filled. Moreover, the authors consider it difficult and unwise to have the functions of all three roles filled by the same person, as this can lead to conflicts of interest and a concentration of power in one person that can threaten democratic processes and lead to gatekeeping. The case of the organization of a federation of five housing cooperatives in a multi-ethnic district of Los Angeles is presented to examine how residents and the cooperatives' leadership grappled with the organization problems and learned to solve them through recognizing the importance of the organizers, interpreters, and multicultural mediators and the need for keeping these roles separate. Theories reflecting my personal experience and life development
Article Abstract:
Social science theories are expressive acts by their authors, and thus reflect their author's life experiences and developmental tasks. Maslow's theory of human motivation and Alderfer's conception of existence, relatedness, and growth (ERG) needs are frameworks accounting for the same phenomena. An alternative to Maslow's formulation, ERG theory was presented during a later historical period than its predecessor, and at an earlier stage of its author's life. In this autobiographical account, the author describes his childhood and adolescent origins and the events that led him to formulate ERG theory, examines the life stages at which he and Maslow developed their theories, and discusses how aspects of the authors' lives might account for similarities and differences in their conceptual products.
