'Falling in love with love is falling for make believe': ideologies of romance in post-Enlightenment culture
Article Abstract:
European fiction of the post-Enlightenment 19th- and 20th-centuries has portrayed romantic love as impossible and tragic, although romantic love has become an accepted part of the normative discourse of modern Western culture. The works of Jane Austen, for example, present a powerful criticism of romantic love and a preference for rational discourse about relationships. Romantic love has not been liberating for women, but instead ensnares women with false expectations and oppressive demands.

Islam and knowledge
Article Abstract:
The invocation of Islam tests the power/knowledge complex that underpins the western order, questioning its power as well as the knowledge intrinsic to the exercise of that power. Scholars make a distinction between Islamic knowledge, which refers to the knowledge of the semantic order initiated by the revelations of the Prophet Muhammad, and Islamicate knowledge, which consists of all those working within a social and political order dominated by the signature of Islam.

Enlightenment (Zen Buddhist)
Article Abstract:
Enlightenment in the Buddhist context is an individual's awakening to the true nature of mind, although the term 'true nature of mind' remains indefinable. The Zen tradition of Far Eastern Buddhism is most insistent about the necessity of a transmission 'outside of words and letters', meaning it is important as an experience rather than as an idea.
