Female genital mutilation: the struggle to eradicate this rite of passage
Article Abstract:
Fauziya Kassindja's flight from Togo to avoid female genital mutilation and subsequent fight for asylum in the US publicized the human rights issues raised by the practice, but little has been done to curb the practice. An estimate 80 to 120 million women have been subjected to the practice. It is defended as a religious practice, but it is clearly a method that men use to exert power over women's sexuality. Some US legislators have moved to curb the practice in African communities in the US, but more needs to be done to protect women worldwide from this assault on their human rights.

Nejib Hosni's release: an international legal campaign
Article Abstract:
The Tunisian government dropped its charges and pardoned lawyer Nejib Hosni only after a campaign led by international legal and human rights organizations exposed the falsity of the charges against him. Hosni's practice focused on defending opposition groups and individuals being persecuted by the Ben Ali government. The government arrested him on trumped-up charges, refused to allow defense counsel to introduce evidence and convicted him. Further charges were brought, but the government released him in Dec 1996 in response to pressure from foreign governments.
