From the private family domain to the public health forum: sexual abuse, women and risk for HIV infection

Article Abstract:

The two crucial risk factors for HIV transmission among women are intravenous drug use, and unsafe heterosexual contact. The US Department of Health and Human services revealed that women are the fastest growing HIV-infected group. A study of 146 women who were drug users, or pregnant or were mothers of a pre-school age child, proved the strong relationship between sexual abuse histories and drug-associated behavior which increased the risk of HIV-infection for women.
