Level of development and rates of return to schooling: some estimates from multicountry data
Article Abstract:
The rates of return to schooling from data on labor force education and real income obtained from various countries are analyzed using an earnings-function methodology. Income measures used have cross-country compatibility, real GDP per worker is considered and the schooling variable measures education per worker. Rates of return are found to be lower in developed countries than in less developed countries. The global rate of return is determined to be of the order of 13%.

When method matters: monitoring poverty in Bangladesh
Article Abstract:
Debates continue on the efficacy of existing poverty measurement methods. Among the issues are the setting of poverty lines and the measurement of individual welfare. Analysis of poverty measure estimates for Bangladesh show discrepancies which suggest that the poverty line should be considered an estimate of the cost of a set of basic consumption needs. The estimates also reflect changes in measurement methodology, including survey design.
