Growth capabilities and development: implications for transition processes in Cuba

The economics of development: the procrustean bed of mainstream economics
Article Abstract:
The 'Handbook of Development Economics' provides an excellent overview of the field of development economics and what its practitioners do and have already accomplished. However, its treatment of development economics, a highly complex topic, is at best simplistic because of the authors' strict adherence to orthodox analytical frameworks and techniques. Unless economists accept the value of other non-traditional approaches, the field of development economics will have little change of achieving progress.

Political instability, freedom, and economic growth: some further evidence
Article Abstract:
Political and institutional factors have been found to affect economic growth. Recent studies on economic growth indicate that the absence of civil and political freedom is inversely related to economic growth. Political instability hampers economic growth since capital and labor is reduced. A simple growth model is developed to study the relation of political instability and lack of freedom on economic growth.
