Horizontal diversification in the Danish national system of innovation: the case of pharmaceuticals
Article Abstract:
The history of Denmark's Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals Inc. demonstrated that factor endowments, inter-sectoral linkages and the cumulative mastery of core technologies served as inducement mechanisms to innovation in the Danish environment. While horizontal linkages such as producer-user interaction and university-industry cooperation also played a role in the company's product innovation, the main sources of innovation were suppliers, the manufacturer, universities and users.
