Neighborhood-based foster care: A critical examination of location-based placement criteria

Article Abstract:

A critical examination of the neighborhood approach to foster care placement which are likely to produce beneficial outcomes for children placed in out-of-home care is offered. The research suggests that the odds for improving child well-being are increased when children are exposed to positive parenting practices, particularly when living with caregivers who use their social capital to the children's advantage.

Ida Cannon, Ethel Cohen, and early medical social work in Boston: The foundations of a model of culturally competent social service

Article Abstract:

The work of medical social workers Ida Cannon and Ethel Cohen within the contexts of progressivism, professionalization, immigration and ethnic identity is discussed. Cohen uses Cannon's model of hospital social service, however revised it more in order to accommodate the particular ethnic needs of Jewish immigrants.

Approaching the transition to adulthood: Distinctive profiles of adolescents aging out of the child welfare system

Article Abstract:

The studies conducted to investigate heterogeneity among youth who are on the verge of exiting the child welfare system and making the transition to independent living are presented. Results identified four subpopulations specified by distinctive profiles on indicators reflecting multiple domains of life experience.
