Organizational structure, determinants of promotion, and gender differences in attainment
Article Abstract:
The dynamics of career development are investigated by differentiating between vacancy-driven system and merit-driven promotion system. In the former, a job opening is necessary for promotion, while in the latter, a vacancy at a higher level is not required. The implications for individual attainment from exposure to each of the advancement regimes are examined by employing work histories from a large insurance firm. Also, the differential effect of position in the company and office location on the advancement prospects of men and women is analyzed.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the idleness, schooling and work activities of Mexican and non-Latino white teenagers. The influence of the residential context on the generational pattern of school enrollment was also examined. Results indicated that the behavior of foreign-born Mexicans correlate with their age at immigration. Findings also showed the usefulness of a segmented assimilation framework in analyzing educational concerns among Mexican-origin teenagers.
