Pursuing equity without getting beat
Article Abstract:
An article on the emphasis of international health policy debates on efficiency-driven rather than equity-drive approaches is evaluated. It is argued that the dichotomy between equity and efficiency is similar to the one the exists between market-driven and centrally-planned health care systems, both of which are unsuccessful. It is also suggested that improving equity rests on the development of an efficient public health sector.

In defense and pursuit of equity and efficiency
Article Abstract:
An article on the emphasis of international health policy debates on efficiency-driven rather than equity-drive approaches is evaluated. It is argued that equity and efficiency are not mutually exclusive but mutually reinforcing. Health care policies in the former Soviet Union countries are cited to show that equity cannot be sustained in an inefficient system. Thus, health policies must advocate both equity and efficiency.

In defence and pursuit of equity: a response
Article Abstract:
An article on the emphasis of international health policy debates on efficiency-driven rather than equity-drive approaches is evaluated. It is argued that equity has ceased to be a priority in the health policy agenda while the efficiency-driven approach has allowed governments to ignore the realities in public health care facilities. Ways to renew interest on the issue of equity in health care are discussed.
