Social intentions: aggregate, collective, and general
Article Abstract:
A comparison of Tuomela's reductivist analysis of we-intentions with Gilbert's analysis of social facts reveals the failure of individualism and holism to explain moral theory. Moral principle restricts action-inducing intentions, which is generally overlooked by books on collective action. The generality of intentional contents implies universalizability principles and proactive altruism. Tuomela's account breaks down over intentions to cooperate, while Gilbert's explanation excludes legitimate authority and group structure.

Research on well-being: Some advice from Jeremy Bentham
Article Abstract:
Jeremy Bentham provided a complete list of the sources of pleasure and pain, explicitly using the term well-being and making both qualitative and quantitative proposals for its measurement. A study is presented which focuses on Bentham the would-be scientific policy maker, rather than Bentham the philosopher, who insisted that any action of the legislator should always be judged by whether or not it seems to augment or diminish the happiness of those directly concerned.
