Static and Dynamic Forecasting of Short-Run Demand for Money

Article Abstract:

Short-run demand for money was predicted by both static and dynamic forecasts of money supply as having a downward trend in the past 1974 period. Various explanations have been offered to explain a 'missing money puzzle' created by these estimates. The culprit is the misleading inferences of the dynamic forecasting model. They demonstrate that a varying parameter regression (VR) technique solves the missing money problem and gives more accurate estimation of money balances. The basic formula and predicted values are included.
