Strategic planning: a closer view
Article Abstract:
Housing agency managers are often so caught up in the day-to-day problems of running their programs and developments that they seldom have time to devote to long-range planning. This is unfortunate since it is always beneficial to look to the future and see how it can be spent gainfully. Strategic planning can be approached from different directions. One approach is the use of a simple linear general planning model that consists of the development of a vision, a mission, organization goals, strategies to achieve objectives and action plans. This is followed by the execution of the plan, follow-up and evaluation. For long-range, multi-year planning, the best model to employ is a circular or a spiral one that allows the repetition of steps. The model involves holding a staff planning session, collecting feedback from clients, conducting a board planning session, and having a board and staff planning session.

Aiming for success
Article Abstract:
Organizational survival and success in the 1990s entail strategic planning. Development of a strategic planning starts with examining a group's history before evaluating its present condition. After studying the external and internal forces that may affect the business and considering the inputs of possible stakeholders, a preferred future state for the organization is determined. Following the definition of a mission statement, certain tasks need to be performed, including evaluation of strategies and barriers, setting of objectives and deciding on an action plan. After a year, evaluation and review are conducted. Then, planning is made with consideration of the forces that drive a business. Driving forces include market needs, quality of product and service, production capability, natural resources, growth or size, funding, methods of sales and distribution and technology.
