Systems option for sustainable development - effect and limit of the Ministry of International Trade and industry's efforts to substitute technology for energy

Article Abstract:

Japan's success in overcoming energy and environmental constraints in achieving and maintaining sustainable development is largely due to the Japanese International Trade and Industry Ministry's (MITI) cooperative efforts with industry to substitute technology for energy. A study therefore analyzed the MITI's policy system including its industrial technology policy in the 1970s and 1980s to demonstrate the viability of a proposed comprehensive systems approach for maintaining sustainable development well into the 21st century.

Trends in the substitution of production factors to technology - empirical analysis of the inducing impact of the energy crisis on Japanese industrial technology

Article Abstract:

The rapid development of industrial technology has enabled Japan to sustain its high level of industrial productivity despite the energy crises of 1973 and 1976. In this study, the stock of technical knowledge was measured and incorporated into the production function. Translog cost function analysis showed increased investment in industrial research and increasing substitution of all production factors with technology.
