Text and music revisited
Article Abstract:
Cultural theory has long been faced with the problem of the relationship between music and text as symbolic modes. Semiotics and linguistics traditionally have understood all symbolic modes as related to human sign systems, and all human communication as stemming from systems of verbal language. Music and dance scholars have campaigned for an understanding of the irreducible difference between all symbolic modes. An analysis of the perceived dichotomy of text/music is presented, with a view to eliminating the distinction.
