The Chesapeake Bay program
Article Abstract:
The Chesapeake Bay Program is the longest running and the most successful water remediation effort in the US. Its study began in 1979 and its implementation began in 1983. The program is interesting not only in its success but in that its goal is to improve marine life-support systems in the bay and not just the water quality. Prevention of nutrient overload into the bay has resulted into a more friendly environment for fishes, oysters, aquatic grasses and benthos.

A management plan for Puget Sound, Washington State, USA
Article Abstract:
The discovery of high levels of toxic contaminants in sediments, pathological substances, fin erosion in flatfish and other abnormalities in Puget Sound, WA, prompted state authorities to establish the Puget Sound Water Quality Authority. The cleanup program spearheaded by this body is interesting in that it demonstrated the complexity of water pollution problems and the effectiveness of an agency with a specific goal.
