The conflict over sexuality education: interviews with participants on both sides of the debate
Article Abstract:
An intensive study of 22 respondents in the mid-Atlantic states shows that the debate over sexuality education is the result of conflict of two opposite visions of morality, family, gender and national identity. The 11 advocates of comprehensive sexuality education considered sexuality a personal choice. They perceived a threat to public education, personal freedom and social and sexual equality from an opposite movement towards authoritarian theocracy. The proponents of abstinence-only education related the moral decline in the nation to the secular notion of the opposite program.
