The end of Luhmann's social systems theory
Article Abstract:
Niklas Luhmann is a German social theorist who has made a major contribution to sociology, yet his position could be attacked by arguments that he himself uses. The genealogy of his systems theory can be traced back to older European thought. He can be usefully categorized as a modern Hegelian, having developed Hegel's dialectical approach. Luhmann's theoretical approach to self-referential systems has turned out not to be a fruitful path, though other systems-theoretic approaches could be set up in line with postfoundationalism.

Luhmann and emergentism: competing paradigms for social systems theory
Article Abstract:
Emergentism is found to address its own core problem successfully whereas Luhmann's approach is incapable of resolving questions of causation and reductionism are debated. Arguments suggest that paradigm has a convincing response to the challenges of meaning and self-reference.
