The first 35 years: A history of Siecus
Article Abstract:
The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) was formed in 1964 in response to a perceived need to promote a positive approach to sexuality issues. The aim was to identify particular characteristics that distinguish sexuality from, but also relate it to human reproduction, dignify sexuality with openness and provide leadership to professionals and society. In the 1970s SIECUS sponsored several programs helping to explain the role of sexuality from differing viewpoints, and in the 1980s it helped health and mental health professionals address the sexuality needs of people faced with the AIDS epidemic. It has developed important partnerships in the 1990s and has taken steps to position itself as a nationally recognized organization.
