Yersinia enterocolitica
Article Abstract:
Yersinia enterocolitica are bacteria which affect the gastrointestinal tract, causing diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. Sore throat and headaches have also been noted. Symptoms similar to appendicitis (pseudoappendicular syndrome) have been documented in adults. Severity of symptoms can range from mild to potentially fatal, and postinfection manifestations include arthritis and tender red patches of skin. The infection may be acquired either by ingesting contaminated food, water and milk. Contamination from dogs, cats and swine as well as person-to-person transmission have also been reported. Incubation period is from 1 to 11 days. Diagnosis is made by isolating the organism in stool samples. The use of doxycycline or trimethoprim-sulfamethozole antibiotics is the currently recommended treatment; studies indicate that quinolines may offer the best treatment.

The liking and viewing of regular TV series
Article Abstract:
How does audience evaluation relate to audience size? In practice, television viewers give series liking scores that are middling rather than high because TV series are watched irregularly by most of their viewers, and how much viewers say they like a series varies with how often they watch it. There is also a Double Jeopardy effect whereby series with small audiences are liked somewhat less by their relatively few viewers than the more popular series are liked by theirs. Also, more demanding programs tend to get slightly higher liking scores than entertainment programs after allowing for their often smaller audiences. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Using management consultants
Article Abstract:
A UK survey of 25 employers indicates that most use management consultants for specific projects, in an attempt to gain expert input on specific areas or objectives. For example, job evaluation is an area often handled by consultants. Although most respondents said consultant recommendations have been accepted and used, a number of companies said the consultants lacked understanding of employee culture or labor laws.
