Top ten threats to civil liberties in cyberspace

Article Abstract:

The ACLU and other groups committed to civil liberties have been defending freedom of speech and the right to privacy on the Internet and in electronic communications from attacks by Congress, state legislatures and online providers swayed by political pressure. Hate speech and pornography are being used to justify restrictions on access to such information, despite the fact that such information is protected in other fora. The anonymity of speech is being assaulted, as are e-mail privacy interests. The government is fighting to keep online users from using encryption software.

How to fight for civil liberties: choosing the right court

Article Abstract:

The ABA's Individual Rights & Responsibilities Section has created the Committee on State Constitutional Rights to help protect US human rights by improving the bar's knowledge and use of state constitutions. Lawyers handling rights cases are increasingly preferring state courts due to the growing hostility of the federal courts. Consequently, lawyers would do well to acquaint themselves thoroughly with new arguments based on analyses of state constitutions. The Committee will help to provide such information.

Renewing the commitment to individual rights

Article Abstract:

The ABA Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities, founded in 1966, is the ABA's conscience and the section is just as necessary today as ever. This is the only ABA section focusing on issues unrelated to most members' paid work. The world is faced with many human rights issues today which this ABA section can help address, including increasing racial and ethnic divisiveness at home and abroad.
