U.S. antitrust policy, interface compatibility standards, and information technology
Article Abstract:
The relationship between US technology standards, interface compatibility standards, in particular, and competitive considerations in information technology (IT) industries is explored. The network-based characteristics of the IT industry often lead to an important competitive reliance on legally interoperability standards-setting processing as a deciding factor for which technology becomes the recognized dominant design for national and international markets.

The ways in which standardization could be used as a means to inscribe flexibility into infrastructures is explored and the role of standardized gateway technologies is focused. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) for structured information exchange and the ISO container are examined.
