When a parent dies of AIDS: helping children cope

Article Abstract:

The children of people with AIDS and people who have died of AIDS are in need of legal and social services to a greater extent than other family members affected by the epidemic. Attorneys can work with social workers to resolve custody and guardianship issues, though attorneys should be aware of the differences between social work and legal advocacy. Children of people with AIDS face many additional social, emotional and economic challenges, and people with the disease are rarely able to devote the time needed to both nurture and provide for the children.

Protecting our children, protecting our future

Article Abstract:

Children in the US have few civil rights despite the fact that US adults have fundamental rights that are as strong as any in the world. Criminal procedure law has progressed to offer some protections, but the law has not yet solved the delicate balance between protecting children and acknowledging some level of autonomy. Despite advances in protecting the educational rights of disabled children, federal law, state law and local practices are often at odds regarding bringing these children into the educational mainstream while meeting their special needs.
