Workload and psychological strain: a test of the French, Rodgers, and Cobb hypothesis
Article Abstract:
The French, Rodgers and Cobb theory of a curvilinear correlation between person-environment (P-E) fit and psychological strain was successfully tested among self-employed and non-self-employed dentists. The dentists' study measured strain on the basis of job satisfaction and self-esteem and P-E was based on the number of work hours. Self-employed dentists displayed lower strain levels and better P-E fit than non-self-employed dentists. Their strain scores and P-E fit had a curvilinear correlation. Dentists whose preferred and typical workloads fit had greater self-esteem and work satisfaction.

The effects of transition stress: a relocation study
Article Abstract:
The cross-sectional multiple regression method was utilized to assess the impact of facility relocation on employee performance. Results derived from a survey conducted on 175 employees from various British supermarket chains indicate that relocation efforts tend to induce psychological distress among employees, particularly on personal characteristics, such as social desirability of response, locus of control and gender. These negative effects, however, may be alleviated through massive social support and work control.
