A new urbanization?

Article Abstract:

The international capitalist economic structures are not the only reasons for the creation of the highly commercialized postmodern cities. There are certain social processes involved in the growth and development of these urban areas. The distinction between traditional values and the materialistic culture of the present society and the shift of focus from production to consumption are also responsible for the growing alienation in the inner cities. Self-centeredness and lack of socialization are the characteristics of the residents of postmodern cities.

Theme parks and urban fantasy-scapes

Article Abstract:

The postmodernist trend in urban planning presents unlimited prospects for the construction of entertainment centers and theme parks. Disneyland, the quintessential technological park, depicts the influence of corporate power over the cultural landscape of the urban cities. Cities like Baltimore, New York and Chicago have become a haven for entertainment seekers. Yet the quest for technological innovations seems unceasing. Even the cemeteries and industrial sites have been converted into recreation centers that attract tourists from all over the world.

Tourism urbanization

Article Abstract:

Cities that have come under the spell of postmodernism are increasingly being developed as centers of tourist attraction. These urban areas are designed to cater to the needs of the visitors. The visitors who flock to this area comprise not only the foreign tourists but also the people from the neighbouring suburbs and inner cities. Cities that host mega-events such as the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and other international events also lead to urban development and growth.
