A theory of media power and a theory of media use: different stories, questions, and ways of thinking
Article Abstract:
A comparison of the propositions, concepts and assumptions of the uses and gratifications (U&G) and media system dependency (MSD) theories shows how they differ on their notions of interpersonal networks, audience, nature of media power and the media system. While the U&G theory considers the individual's shaping of media content to satisfy his needs as theoretically interesting, MSD theorists hold a more social-oriented view of the behavior of audience members relative to media. In short, where the U&G theory is focused on the sociodemographic origins of differences in media use, the MSD theory is grounded on an interpersonal and sociological view of media use.

Children and media: on growth and gaps
Article Abstract:
Very few research has been conducted on the neuropsychological effects of media on children. In Dec 1997, about 700 Japanese children were brought to hospitals due to seizures that occurred after watching an episode of the 'Pokemon,' a Japanese animated cartoon that has strobe-like special effects. It was suggested that a developmental research model should be used to study the role of television in children's lives.
