From the shop floor to the show: Joseph W. McCann, typesetting races, and expressive work in 19th-century America
Article Abstract:
The typesetting match between Joseph McCann and Bill Barnes and all other typesetting races were considered shop floor celebrations of working class culture. The popularity of the races reached its height after the Civil war and continued until the mid-1880s. Although it originated from the print shop, typeracing joined even the popularity of bigger racing events such as bicycle racing and other sports such as boxing. However, certain factors such as technology and the changing nature of the workplace contributed to declining popularity of typeracing.
