An H CD guide to the Internet
Article Abstract:
Housing and community development (H CD) agencies need to understand what the Internet is in order to take full advantage of it. The Internet, or the Net as it is sometimes known, is an aggregate of linked computer networks that uses the Transmission Control Protocol Internet Protocol (TCP IP) to communicate. Several other networks that do not utilize the TCP IP protocol are connected to the Internet. Currently, the number of Internet users is pegged at 40 million but is said to be growing at a 10% rate a month. Users must have any type of personal computer with a 386 processor running DOS 5.0 or higher, a minimum of four megabytes of free memory and a hard drive. A modem is likewise needed to convey and receive information via the Internet. For the H CD professional, the Internet offers several benefits. It can be used to transmit information anywhere in the world, engage in electronic discussions, transfer data to another Internet system and find materials.

Disaster planning
Article Abstract:
Housing authorities can minimize computer downtime and disruptions to their operations by developing a plan to protect their equipment and data from any disaster. Such a plan must be carefully prepared, communicated to all organizational members and implemented as soon as possible before any accident or catastrophe happens. Contingency or disaster planning must cover three areas: equipment, data and office environment. The most important step that can be taken to protect computer hardware and software is to insure them separately. This way, a housing authority can easily obtain funds to restore a damaged computer system. In protecting data, authorities must focus on system back-ups and storage. As for the office environment, the first consideration should be establishing priorities so that only the most critical computer functions are restored first.

Community 2020: new HUD software
Article Abstract:
Community 2020 is a software developed by the Dept of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the use of housing and community development professionals. The program enables users to access demographic data on HUD fund grantees and projects, which can be presented in forms or maps. Information on the funding of HUD programs and on activities at the local level are available through this program. Community 2020 can present a broad geographic region or focus on a specific community. Users are able to shift the scale of a map, alter a map and save maps in their original and revised form. In addition, the software offers an aggregate of data tables that enable users to convert 'data views,' change them into spreadsheets or revise the style of the presented information.
