An overview of work, retirement, and pensions in Japan

Article Abstract:

Japan's public policy initiatives, cultural attitudes, popular interest in working, pensions, health and opportunity explain the higher number of older working people in Japan than in other developed countries. The sequential transition in the work-to-retirement progression enables the older person to have a soft ending of his work life. The Ministry of Labor undertakes innovative attempts to provide meaningful work for the retired. The establishment of the Silver Human Resource Center and the proposal for a Center for Career Productivity for the Aged are products of such attempts.

Emergence of the third age: toward a productive aging society

Article Abstract:

This article addresses the aging baby boomers and governmental policy concerning the elderly. The author maintains that public policy must change, and will not only hinge on the large population of elderly, but on the economic conditions of the time, which will be in the interests of the baby boomers.
