Associations and their journals: The search for an "official" voice
Article Abstract:
Illustrations of eight associations provide the answers to the questions as to why organizations desire to possess and control an official journal and by what means they acquire them. The answers explain that journals prove an effective medium for launching an authentic and persuasive voice for the profession, and that an organization manages to obtain its own official journal either by initiating a competitive publication, obtaining one as a gift or as inheritance, or by totally purchasing one.

Medical journals
Article Abstract:
The reasons for the superiority of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in the US are examined. While both journals have similar format, they differ in article presentation. The NEJM adapts a serious approach as opposed to JAMA which features works of art on its cover. The journals cater to both physicians and sociologists as they publish both scientific articles and those of interest to the public.
