Augmentation and undermining from combining activities: the role of choice in activity engagement theory

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to test whether an identified activity is correlated with an approach or avoidance orientation that functions as a reference point for carrying out evaluative inferences concerning engagement choices. Ways in which combining activities can undermine or improve interest were examined. Results indicated that combining liked activities and switching back and forth between has various influence on subsequent interest when represented as engaging in alternative activities versus engaging in multiple parts of the same activity.
