Becoming self employed: the case of Japanese men
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to assess the determinants of nonfarm self-employment for Japanese men from 1930 to 1975. The chance of becoming self-employed at labor force entry and in later career was also examined. Results revealed that although self-employment is not the dominant mode in the determination of career and mobility patterns, it constitutes quite a portion of labor force. Job opportunity in various employment sectors and the mode or structure of industrial production appropriate for the economic development at that time affect the chance of becoming self-employed on labor force entry.

Gender depictions of the professionally employed: a content analysis of trade publications, 1960-1990
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the trade publications from 1960 to 1990 reveals an overall improvement in the visual depictions of professional women. The large numbers of women in this category and the fact that women are in positions to influence the coverage may be the reasons for the improvement. However, in the advertisements there is still stereotyping of women and a reduction of their achievements. The role of those who create and control visual presentations is thus very significant in the struggle for just representations of women.
