The impact of feminist thought on sociology

Article Abstract:

The increased interest in gender studies among sociologists was partly due to an increase in numbers of women studying the subject. Postmodernism means that categories such as radical, liberal and socialist feminism are outdated. Gender was initially seen as given, and a result of nature, and this view was challenged in the 1960s. Socialization has been used to explain gender differences, though an alternative view is to see gender as less important than class, or to see culture as important.

Occupations and stratification: issues of measurement

Article Abstract:

The Socioeconomic Index developed by Otis Duncan has played an important role as a measure of occupatioanl status in stratification research. It was considered a breakthrough at the time of its introduction since it placed all occupations ona continuous scale and has been frequently used as a measure of the occupational and the social status of occupational incumbents. However, considerable effort has been done to revise and update the concept.
