From 'sustainable rural communities' to 'social sustainability': giving voice to diversity in Mangakahia Valley, New Zealand
Article Abstract:
A critique is presented of New Zealand's rural development policies, using communities of the Mangakahia Valley as an example. It is suggested that the policies should incorporate the diverse cultural, social and ethnic aspects of the region's residents, creating sustainable development policies responsive and reflective of community needs.

This article evaluates landowners' perceptions of soil degradation in Victoria, Australia. Issues discussed include human-environmental issues, soil degradation through salinity, erosion and chemicals, agricultural policy and impact of soil degradation, and the hazards research paradigm used in this study.
