German immigrant women in American art
Article Abstract:
Women German immigrants since the 19th century have made remarkable contributions to American art. Some of them were Louisa Heuser Weste, a portrait artist who settled in San Antonio, TX, landscape painter Elizabeth Frankenstein and still life painter Linna V. Irelan. Miniature painters, Frieda and Alice Emilie Ludovici became active in the art scene in Los Angeles, CA. Elisabeth Fulda was one of the major artists who did the decorative work for the National Zoological Park in Washington, DC, while Dorothy Loeb became active in the WPA Federal Arts Program in the 1930s.

Gente-puente: social capital and immigrant leadership formation
Article Abstract:
Gente-puente are immigrant children who strongly adhere to the supportive values of the parent culture and have a strong in-group friendship network and higher self perception. These characteristics are what make these children likely to succeed as civic and religious leaders and academic achievers. Based on an interview of gente-puente Latino college students, opportunities for career options, economic advancement and family pride are factors that greatly motivate them into staying and finishing college.
