Improving on probability weighting for household size
Article Abstract:
An alternative method of poststratification on the census totals for the proportion of adults in households with one, two, three, four, five or more than five adults can be used to avoid oversampling of individuals from small households. Aside from weighting being proportional to the number of adults in a household, poststratification also automatically makes the survey match the census. Standard errors of weighted sample means are likewise minimized by the poststratification weights, which are less variable than the weights derived from household size.

Presidential address: a response to the nonresponse problem
Article Abstract:
Researchers should pay more attention to the lack of response to surveys. Low response rates are getting little attention due to market competitiveness, the belief that a serious problem does not exist and the belief that statistical adjustments can solve the problem. Problems in locating respondents and in getting respondents to cooperate contribute to the nonresponse problem. Researchers should spend more time and money in increasing response.

A method to increase response when external interference and time constraints reduce interview quality
Article Abstract:
Researchers can improve both response rates and response quality by following a two-step process. The first step is to get respondents to agree to be interviewed, and the second step is to actually conduct the interviews. This process is more expensive and requires more data-collection time, but data quality is greatly improved.
